The government needs “policy” to support the use of gas and the “transition” to net zero energy

Australian Energy Producers chief executive Samantha McCulloch says government policy must “recognise” the important role of gas in energy discussions.

The Labor government has announced that it will use gas until 2050 and beyond.

“The gas can be turned on quickly. This is the perfect support for renewable energy sources,” McCulloch told Sky News Australia.

“That is why AEMO (Australian Energy Market Operator) and others are identifying the need for approximately 13 gigawatts of investment in new gas generation capacity in the East Coast NEM (National Electricity Market) alone.

“We currently do not have the right policy settings to support this investment.

“We need to ensure that our policies start to align with what we know will be needed to ensure a smooth and successful transition to net zero.”
