New regulations on veterinary medicines coming into force on May 17, 2024

Legislation to modernize the Veterinary Medicines Regulations 2013 (VMR) was introduced in Parliament on 4 March and adopted on 25 April.

The Veterinary Medicines (Amendment etc.) Regulations 2024 will maintain the UK as an attractive place to develop and market veterinary medicines and will apply from 17 May 2024.

The VMR sets out controls on the placing on the market, manufacture, distribution, possession and administration of veterinary medicines and medicated feed. They are a key tool to help protect animal health, public health and the environment.

To allow interested parties time to comply with specific new or changed requirements, the legislation includes transitional provisions for certain requirements.

We continue to work with our stakeholders to help them implement changes and support their compliance with the Regulations. We will publish updated guidance reflecting the changes, which will be available from May 17 on the Veterinary Medicines Guidance section of GOV.UK.

More information can be found in the VMD Information Center.
