Charles River reaches 100% renewable energy milestone

Charles River Laboratories, a pharmaceutical and microbiological testing company, will use 100% renewable energy across all of its international operations from the first quarter of 2024.

The British company achieved this sustainability milestone well ahead of schedule.

In 2020, Charles River became one of the first 300 members of RE100, a global corporate renewable energy initiative.

As part of the RE100 initiative, Charles River has committed to using 100% renewable energy globally by 2030.

Charles River joins a small group of companies that have achieved this goal across the organization, in line with RE100 standard reporting criteria.

To achieve its green goal of renewable energy, Charles River has undertaken the following efforts:

Two critical virtual power purchase agreements (vPPAs) have been signed in the US and Europe

In 2020, the Company initiated a 15-year contract with Deriva Energy to supply a 102 MW vPPA solar power plant located in Texas, which will cover 100% of North America’s electricity demand with clean, renewable energy from January 2023.

Moreover, in 2023, a 12-year vPPA for 30 MW wind farms at Charles River was launched in partnership with Spanish multi-energy company Repsol, which covers the organization’s entire European electricity load.

We work with leading organizations to support the implementation of green energy solutions

In 2022, Charles River was recognized by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s Green Power Partnership as a leader in the use of green electricity.

Last year, the company joined the Renewable Thermal Collaborative, a global coalition of companies, institutions and governments committed to scaling up the use of renewable energy for heating and cooling.

In 2020, Charles River became one of the first 300 RE100 members

Charles River was also a sponsor of Energise, a program led by Schneider Electric to increase access to renewable energy for pharmaceutical supply chains.

$13.5 million (USD) invested in sustainability-focused projects through the Charles River Sustainability Capital Fund

Between 2020 and 2023, Charles River funded more than 100 projects around the world that reduce its environmental impact, including energy conservation and greenhouse gas reduction activities.

It has significantly reduced greenhouse gas emissions from its facilities

At the end of 2023, Charles River achieved 37% of greenhouse gas emissions from its facilities (scope 1 and 2 emissions).
