Protecting our privacy: strengthening responsibility for public oversight | Political Magazine | Channels

May 8, 2024 | Each year in Policy Magazine’s Emerging Voices series, Max Bell School MPs are asked to write articles on issues important to them. In her fifth article for 2024, Asha Sivarajah highlights the importance of protecting privacy rights while ensuring transparency and accountability in public agencies’ use of surveillance technology. Asha has previous experience at the Canadian International Council (CIC) and as a researcher in El Salvador. He now seeks to leverage his research and advocacy experience to develop policies that will help improve human rights protections, particularly in the data and technology sectors.

“Beyond legal reform, greater participation in setting the digital policy agenda is needed – especially when it comes to online surveillance. This includes working with academics and civil society organizations that are aware of how open data collection and automated decision-making in policing can have a disparate impact on historically marginalized groups.”
