2.8 MWDC solar project modernizes the electrical grid in rural East Tennessee, provides renewable energy to local schools and supports educational opportunities for local students

NASHVILLE, Tenn., May 10, 2024–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Clearloop, a Silicon Ranch company and a leading provider of carbon solutions that accelerate the decarbonization of the power grid and expand access to renewable energy in U.S. communities that stand to benefit most, today announced that Intuit Inc. , global financial technology platform and national outdoor specialty retailer REI Co-op have transitioned to a new 2.8 MW power plantDC White Pine Solar Farm in White Pine, Tennessee today.

Intuit and REI supported the development of the 1.4 MW capacityDC photovoltaic project through Clearloop’s unique and innovative approach to helping organizations recover their carbon footprint. These combined efforts are estimated to prevent more than 162 million pounds of carbon from entering the atmosphere over the life of the project and produce enough low-cost electricity to power nearly 400 homes in the local community. In addition to support from Intuit and REI, the solar project is made possible by the Tennessee Valley Authority’s distributed energy program and the collaboration of local utilities, including Morristown Utility Systems.

Beginning in 2021, Intuit is working with Clearloop to decarbonize the grid while increasing access to renewable energy across Tennessee. Intuit’s support for the White Pine Solar Farm is built on its ongoing partnership with Clearloop and ongoing efforts in the Prosperity Hub program in Morristown, Tennessee and surrounding areas. In 2016, Intuit launched the Prosperity Hub program to promote economic prosperity for people and communities in need.

To further support surrounding communities, Intuit is donating 1,600 renewable energy certificates (RECs) annually for the next 40 years evenly to schools in Jefferson and Hamblen counties, making them among the first communities to specifically power local public schools with renewable energy in Tennessee and one of the first schools to use green power in the Southeast. In a unique partnership with Intuit and local school systems, Clearloop is making a one-time donation of $100,000 for scholarships ($50,000 per school system) to high school seniors in Jefferson and Hamblen Counties, Tennessee.

“Intuit has long been focused on making a positive impact on the climate, an important issue that directly impacts the well-being and ability of people and communities to thrive. We take a holistic approach to climate and sustainability, driving initiatives internally across our operational footprint, supply chain delivery, and externally in the communities we serve,” he said Debbie Lizt, director of global sustainability at Intuit. “Our partnership with Clearloop and the local community allows us to meaningfully and purposefully focus on new solar projects in areas where we can provide environmental and economic benefits to communities for many years to come.”

REI’s partnership with Clearloop to help launch the White Pine Solar Farm demonstrates the company’s commitment to prioritizing clean energy development, focusing on investments in communities that can benefit the most. Through this partnership, REI will power its new, state-of-the-art distribution center in Lebanon, Tennessee, with 100% renewable energy. The distribution center will serve more than 60 stores and 5.6 million REI members in the area while using 30% less energy than required by code.

“The White Pine project is an exciting addition to REI’s renewable energy portfolio. “We are proud to help bring world-leading solar energy to the Tennessee Valley, a region where we recently opened a new distribution center, serve multiple stores and have thousands of members,” he said Matt Thurston, VP of Sustainability, REI Co-op. “Clearloop’s vision to decarbonize the grid by supporting projects that increase access to clean energy in more communities – along with project investments in local workforce and regenerative land practices – is a vision we strongly believe in.”

“Clearloop’s collaboration with Intuit, REI and the local community helps us realize our commitment to decarbonize the grid, with an intentional focus on launching new solar projects in communities where we can maximize the environmental, educational and economic benefits of climate dollars,” he said Laura Zapata, CEO and co-founder of Clearloop. “This project represents the opportunities that come from responsible, thoughtful and meaningful corporate climate action. We look forward to continuing to develop our relationships with corporate and community leaders to deliver on the promise of a transformative and inclusive energy transition.”

As with all Clearloop projects, the White Pine Solar Farm will be constructed, owned and operated by parent company Silicon Ranch throughout the life of the project. Through this disciplined and community-focused approach, Clearloop will maintain long-term business in the East Tennessee region. The energy efficiency of the White Pine solar project and the amount of emissions it avoids can be tracked live on Clearloop’s website here.
