Does Myrtle Beach, South Carolina allow beach cottages? What we found for city beach rentals

This story is being updated to correct that Shibumi shades are allowed in Myrtle Beach through Memorial Day. Updated 11:49, April 9, 2024

Blue beach cabanas have begun appearing on the sands of Myrtle Beach ahead of the city’s peak season.

This is a departure from the umbrellas usually seen on beaches.

Tents and other devices with a canopy are becoming more and more popular among beachgoers.

But do beach cabanas violate city regulations regarding the permitted use of shade devices on the beach?

Although the beach cabanas are not rented very often, according to city spokesman Mark Kruea, they are covered by a rental franchise agreement that the city has had with two companies for years.

Myrtle Beach allows the use of shade devices smaller than 12 by 12 feet throughout Memorial Day. Then, considered high season, only umbrellas are allowed through Labor Day.

However, in the district, shading devices, except those intended for infants and small children, are not permitted year-round.

Lack’s Beach Service and John’s Beach Service provide rentals in Myrtle Beach. Lack’s and John’s are responsible for different sections of beaches within the city limits.

A person answering the phone at Lack’s said the company has been supplying beach cabanas and tents for many years.

Cabanas are different from products like Shibumi Shades, which the city banned during peak season for safety reasons. Shibumi is a wind-powered canopy with two poles on either side.

The cottages have three sides with an entrance, just like a camping tent.

The city implemented a shading device rule in 2014 ahead of the summer months.
