Practical: small but powerful 2-in-1 charger for Apple devices

Tired of connecting multiple Apple device chargers while traveling? I use the Twelve South ButterFly 2-in-1 MagSafe Charger and find it to be an elegant solution for my iPhone and Apple Watch with fast wireless charging, excellent build quality, and a compact size.

According to Twelve South, the ButterFly is the world’s smallest 2-in-1 USB-C MagSafe charger (considering the thousands of MagSafe chargers on the market, I haven’t tried to verify this). Measuring just 0.9 inches tall, 2.4 inches wide and deep, and weighing just 4.2 ounces, it’s about the size of an AirPods Pro case.

ButterFly looks like a luxury product. It has a brushed aluminum outer casing with a beautiful, fingerprint-resistant matte finish, which is a practical feature of the travel charger. The interior is finished with soft vegan leather that protects your iPhone and Apple Watch.

As a wireless charger, ButterFly enables 15W MagSafe fast charging for iPhone and 5W fast charging for Apple Watch. While I recommend using a MagSafe case for easy fit (finding a good place to charge can be difficult), most thinner cases allow wireless charging. You can also charge AirPods with the MagSafe charging pad or AirPods Pro Gen 2 with the Apple Watch charger. So you can mix and match depending on your needs.

One of the things I liked most about ButterFly during my testing is that you can configure the charger in several different ways to suit your needs. In its most basic mode, it can be laid flat for easy charging access on both charging pads. However, some Apple Watch straps make flat charging difficult, like my Sport Loop, so the ButterFly’s Watch charger can be lifted off the base. (Please note that I had a hard time prying it up with short nails.) The tiltable design also allows you to use the watch’s bedside mode, so you can view it like a bedside clock.

You can also fold the ButterFly to use it as a stand for watching movies (horizontally) or in standby mode as a smart clock. For this to work, you need a strong magnetic attachment to the bare iPhone or MagSafe case. Even then, the magnets are not that strong and can easily slide off when hit. With this setup, I was able to charge both my iPhone and Apple Watch. This only required turning the strap outward to make a clean connection to the Apple Watch Slim Charger.

In the box you’ll find a 30W power adapter, a braided USB-C cable, and four international plug adapters, making ButterFly a one-stop solution for your charging needs. In a pinch, the 30W power adapter can even double as a charger for your MacBook Air, which is a nice bonus.
